You can now fill out the Vacated Vacation Week Form online.  The form is available at smart528.org/vacated-week-form or can also be found on the websites members tab.  When you fill out the form online. We will email you a confirmation page with a time.  That time will serve as the official submitted time, but you will have to call into the office and confirm that it was you that submitted the form.

More than 100 former employees sue CSX

More than 100 CSX Corp. (Nasdq: CSX) employees who were fired or suspended for their use of federally-protected medical leave filed suit Tuesday in Maryland.

The suit comes on the heels of a suit that 46 fired employees filed in West Virginia in February, which also alleged CSX disciplined employees for fraud and dishonesty without evidence.

“While CSX employees understand that working on weekends and holidays comes with the territory, they did not anticipate having to work through serious illnesses, miss their children’s births, or choose between caring for their sick loved ones and losing their jobs,” reads the newly filed suit.

UNITEDHEALTHCARE ISSUES SCAM ALERT

UnitedHealthcare today issued a scam alert in response to reports of a number of calls attempting to solicit personal information from railroad workers.

RONALD BATORY SWORN IN AS FRA ADMINISTRATOR

After months of waiting, Ronald L. Batory was sworn in on Feb. 28 as the new administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

“This day could not have happened soon enough,” Batory said in remarks delivered during the ceremony administered by Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. “Those of you familiar with railroad work rules will appreciate (this): While I was ‘held away from home terminal’ from August 2nd to November 19th of last year and on ‘initial terminal delay’ until today, so needless to say, I’m ready to release the brakes and throttle out.”

The former COO and president of Conrail was nominated by President Donald Trump in July 2017 to lead the FRA. However, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the Senate minority leader, placed a hold on Batory’s nomination in an attempt to work out federal funding for the multi-billion-dollar Gateway Tunnel project between Schumer’s home state and New Jersey.

Where are the trains in $8.5 billion O'Hare plan?

March 01, 2018    O’Hare is in the news again. The City of Chicago is seeking approval of its $8.5 billion airport expansion plan, which we first told you about in October. The plan would demolish the aging Terminal 2 and replace it with a new building that would link Terminals 1 and 3 and form a “global terminal” to serve American and United. Two new satellite terminals would join the existing mid-field concourse, connected to the main terminals by a tunnel. Terminal 5, currently the international terminal, would be dedicated to Delta and other carriers.

Things seemed to be going well for the City’s plan until American Airlines balked over a last-minute change to 5 gates that they were to share with United. The western suburbs are also wondering what happened to their promised “western access.” This parking and security screening facility would have allowed travelers to enter the airport from the west, then proceed to the terminals on the opposite side of the field by an underground people mover. The latest proposal scales this back to an employee-only parking lot.

WEST ALLIS - Defective or missing ties on the tracks caused a coal train to derail in 2017, raining coal down onto Greenfield Avenue from the railroad bridge, according to a report to the Federal Railroad Administration from Union Pacific railroad.

The 145-car train derailed near 105th Street with five of the loaded derailed cars on the bridge over busy Greenfield Avenue. 

The train was headed north when the poor tie conditions caused 21 loaded coal cars to derail, the report said. 

The derailment caused nearly $1.12 million in damage, the railroad estimates. Equipment damage was put at $684,510 and track damage at $480,686.

Greenfield Avenue was closed to traffic after the derailment that happened about 5:20 p.m. Thursday, July 6. 

“A couple residents said their houses shook” when the train derailed, Michael May, one of two aldermen for the area of West Allis where the incident occurred, said at the time.

Power also was knocked out to about 1,000  homes and businesses west of the derailment.

Workers say they warned Amtrak before deadly crash

Portland, Oregon (CNN) In the days before Amtrak 501 careened off the tracks last month in a deadly crash, engineers and conductors warned their supervisors that they did not feel adequately trained on the new route, according to more than a dozen sources.

Several train cars flew off an overpass, landing on Interstate 5 in the December 18 accident near DuPont, Washington, which left three dead and more than 100 injured. At the time, Amtrak 501 was making its inaugural journey of a new Seattle-to-Portland run called the Point Defiance Bypass route.

Engineers and conductors had safety concerns, citing rushed and "totally inadequate" training which left them feeling dangerously unprepared for the new route, according to multiple sources, including several directly involved in the training. Crew members traditionally train on new routes to familiarize themselves with the signs, terrain and other physical characteristics which vary from route to route.
