STATE TWO-PERSON CREW BILL UPDATE

Success is no accident. I am pleased to announce that last Saturday the Maryland House of Delegates passed HB66 by a vote of 102-30 and last Wednesday, the Washington State House of Representatives passed HB1841 on a vote of 72-24. Both votes were bi-partisan. In Maryland and Washington, two-person crew legislation now move to their respective state senates.

Rail Unions Support National Two-Person Crew Bill

The Safe Freight Act (H.R. 1748) requires that two certified crew members operate freight trains on U.S. rails and has the backing of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers — Transportation Division (SMART TD) and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET).

AP Analysis: DOT Miscalculated When Considering ECP Brake Rule

The Associated Press reported Dec. 20 that an analysis by the federal Department of Transportation (DOT) did not take into account up to $117 million in damage reductions when considering the repeal of a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rule requiring the installation of electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes on tanker cars.
